View of Life
By Renee Crizer
I like to describe my view on life as a journey filled with ups and downs until we take our final breath. My view may not look how you picture it. Typically, people view the ‘ups’ as positive times and ‘downs’ as the negative things that occur in our lives.
I have come to understand that the journey of life is filled with good times and difficult ones but we do not face it alone. My faith in my creator is what drives me forward, leads me, walks beside me, has my back, or holds me up. I feel him in the warmth of the sun, the wind in my hair, the birds in the sky, the colors of a flower, and the sound of a babbling brook. I feel him in the love my parents showed me, the laugh of my sister, the affection of my brother, the protection of my husband, and the trust of my children. I am not alone…
The true picture was revealed during a mid-afternoon run. I have not always been able to run and gaining my endurance has been a real struggle. As I pushed up a huge hill, trying to control my breath and pushing through the discomfort, I realized the ‘ups’ are not uplifting at all, but the points in our lives where we struggle. This revelation led me to my view of life.
Most of our life we are on a plateau, getting through each day and moving to the next. It is a constant struggle and by no means easy. One foot in front of the other takes motivation. It is easy to give up and say, “I’m done” or “I just don’t feel like it today.” This is especially evident when the road is not smooth and there are hurdles to jump over. These hurdles are the stressors in life that make things difficult and challenge us to overcome. This may be stress before an exam, a flat tire, an unexpected bill, or an argument with a loved one. By overcoming these obstacles we become stronger. We have all heard the saying, “that which does not kill you makes you stronger.” This holds true, as I would not be who I am today if it were not for the hardships I faced. Each step, each leap we make forward strengthens our muscles, our heart, our soul. I choose to move forward when I have obstacles because I know where I am going: forward—not back, not stagnant—forward.
What motivates me? My faith that my creator is by my side every step of the way. In the analogy of my running, he is like my shadow always present: sometimes in front, beside, or behind. When I don’t see my shadow, he is either pushing me up or lifting me from above. When I am helping others, helping someone feel better, showing kindness, compassion, love, or giving a helping hand, I feel happy and motivated. It’s like running along a plateau and coming upon a slight downhill slope. I enjoy this run; I enjoy who I am, my surroundings, and life is just brighter and easier going downhill.
Now for the tough part. We have all faced challenges. For some, more extreme than others. Some may have lost a child, a parent, a sibling, or a friend. You may have had a breakup, lost a job, or been diagnosed with an illness. During these times we are going uphill. The climb is a difficult one and it may take years, but each step we take gets us closer to the top. With each step it is a struggle. We get out of breath, endure physical and emotional pain, and have thoughts of doubt. Doubting oneself can lead to depression and a feeling that you will never make it. When the top of the hill is out of view it becomes easier to give in or give up. During these times focus on him. You may not feel him because of your anguish but he is there within us…in the wind, the rain, the ground, the sky. Take comfort knowing you do not struggle alone. He is with you always. One foot in front of the next, you will reach the top, the clearing, and you will be stronger and more resilient. He will give you peace.
Let’s enjoy the downhill journey of our lives. Cherish these moments for they are a precious gift. Hold your spouse’s hand, tell your family you love them, laugh together, enjoy the company of your friends, be kind to others—who knows what type of impact you can have on another’s life. You could be the friend to someone in need: motivating them along the plateaus, encouraging them when they face the hills, and rejoicing with them on their downhill reprieves. He can work through you!
“So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Isaiah 41:10
My mother had me memorize Psalm 23 as a child and I have found solace in its verses during times of struggle.
“The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.”
